How to build a planter

A planter it can be set up on the terrace, in the garden or in the courtyard. These are essential elements especially if you want to create separate areas in the same environment. For example, if in the garden you want to separate the dining area from the relaxation area or outside in the courtyard you want to create a boundary line between the driveway that allows the car to enter and the other spaces. For build a planter it will take you a full day, maybe even two if you need foundations.

How to build a planter, the foundations
If there is no existing floor, per build a planter you will need to trace a perimeter and dig to a depth of about 30 cm. It will be necessary to fill the excavation with 10 cm of crushed stone, press and pour 20 cm of concrete. After this preliminary process you can move on to the actual preparation of the planter. Remember that after making the foundation you will have to wait at least one day for the concrete to solidify.

How to build a planter, materials and tools

  • crushed stone or gravel for the foundation, only if it is built on beaten earth and not on an existing floor
  • Concrete
  • Solid bricks
  • Cement mortar
  • Gravel for drainage
  • Membrane or filtering plate
  • Shovel and excavation tools
  • Trowel
  • Spirit level

If you build the planter on the terrace, the gravel for drainage can be replaced with expanded clay which is much more suitable.

How to build a planter, the wall
Tracing a perimeter is important because the wall of your planter will rise along this perimeter. Depending on the desired size, the wall may have the thickness of one or two bricks, in any case it is better to cross the brick courses in order to have a better seal. At each “laying” of bricks you will have to check the level with the bubble to make sure you are working level. The last level of bricks must be placed on the coast.

The base, consisting of the first layer of bricks, must be characterized by small holes. For this, remember to leave space between one brick and the other along the lower course, these holes will constitute the drainage means through which the water can drain.

How to build a planter, filling
At the bottom place a layer of gravel for drainage of about 5 cm. Fill up to the top with soil and plant!

How to prevent the soil from leaking out of the drainage holes?
The gravel must be surrounded by two layers. At the bottom a filtered sheet folded on the sides while, above the gravel, spread a filter membrane, turning it vertically for about 10 cm. This will prevent soil from leaking out when you water and will also contain the roots inside the planter.
