The European Commission has announced the winners of the "European eco-management and audit system"(European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme - Emas). Among the winners, Italy also stands out with Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, municipality of the province of Florence. The economy of the Municipality of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa is based on agriculture and viticulture and has attracted the attention of Emas for its excellent environmental practices.
An overview of Emas
The European Eco Management and Audit Scheme is the Community eco-management and audit scheme which promotes the constant improvement of the environmental performance of all European organizations. European organizations can voluntarily join EMAS as long as it adopts an environmental policy that defines the objectives and principles of action of the organization with respect to the environment and that analyzes theenvironmental impact of all the activities it carries out.
The theme of the 2012 award of the European system of EMAS was "Water management, including water efficiency and quality ". The six winners were chosen by a jury of experts chaired by Jacqueline McGlade, executive director of the European Agency of theenvironment. Among the 27 participating candidates, EMAS awarded:

The Florentine body was awarded the title in the Small Organizations category of the public sector. The award was recognized for its excellent water management: the municipality is obliged to install technologies for the water saving in all new buildings. There are also plans for improvement agricultural to reduce erosion and washout.
There water management is a recurring theme in the municipal councils of the Tavarnelle Val di Pesa administration. The administration takes into consideration the aspects related to water management but also other activities viruous, for example, organize environmental formations for the hotel and restaurant sector.
