Bridge over the Strait of Messina, an impossible work


The bridge over the Strait of Messina will it ever be built? There are those who say that only in Italy could such a project be conceived. The elusive bridge should extend for a length of 3.3 km and should be a single-span bridge, with double road and rail decks. At least according to the current project, a plan that, according to environmental associations, should be sent back to the sender.

The current cost is estimated at 8.5 billion euros and if you want to ignore that the bridge over the Strait of Messina should be built in the area of ​​greatest environmental value in the Mediterranean, it cannot be ignored that it is one of the areas with the highest seismic risk. In short, the project for the construction of the bridge over the Strait of Messina always be completely unfeasible for economic-financial reasons, for social, environmental reasons but above all, for technical reasons!

The environmental associations are satisfied with the position taken by the Minister of the Environment Corrado Clini who sided against the construction of the bridge over the Strait of Messina, the unachievable work was de-financed by the government last January with the CIPE resolution. The Environmental Associations do not limit themselves to supporting Clini but have drawn up a treaty containing 140 pages of Observations to block the project of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina. VIA is the acronym of the procedure Environmental Impact Assessment; here are the two points that the Environmental Associations are keen to point out:

  • from 24 September we reported the numerous gaps and omissions of the supplementary documentation to the final project presented in the EIA procedure by the public concessionaire Stretto di Messina SpA (SDM SpA) on the basis of the 223 requests for additions by the VIA Commission and we asked that the authorization is interrupted and the project returned to the sender, as required by the Procurement Code;
  • the contracting party is not just any private individual, but the public concessionaire company, entirely financed with public money, SDM SpA and it is therefore singular that in the "investigation phase" that always precedes the official start of the EIA procedure it was not deemed necessary to report the matter to the same company or raise the issue within the Government. "

The current project is an impossible work but the fact remains that with better technologies it could be possible to evaluate the setting up of an ad hoc bridge for the territorial needs of the Strait of Messina. Almost certainly, however, it would equally be an impossible work for economic and financial reasons.
