The Food Bank: feeding with the waste of others


From the European excesses 58,390 tons of food and on the National Food Collection Day another 10,120 tons: this is what was collected in 2011 alone Food Bank thanks to the 1,500 volunteers who dedicate their time to ensure that food is not wasted unnecessarily. In addition to them, companies can also lend a hand: for Andrea Giussani, President of the Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation, “We have in our DNA the collaboration with the business world which also helps us reach distant targets for us”.

1) How and when was the Food Bank born and with what objective and for whose benefit?

The first Food Bank was founded in 1967 in Phoenix in the United States thanks to John Van Hengel, and then spread to the USA and Europe with the Fédération Européenne des Banques Alimentaires (FEBA). In Italy in 1989 the Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation (FBAO) thanks to the meeting between Cav. Danilo Fossati, owner of the Star, and Mons. Luigi Giussani, founder of the movement of Communion and Liberation. The mission of the FBAO is to recover the production surpluses of the agri-food chain and redistribute them to the charitable structures that have an agreement with it that assist the destitute people in our country.

2) How has your business developed over the years?

The Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation has developed on the national territory thanks to the interest of the people who have set up some Banco Alimentare realities in Italian cities. Since 2010 the Food Bank Network, today made up of 21 Food Bank Organizations and the Food Bank Foundation Onlus which guides and coordinates its activities. The organizations share "the aims and the educational concept of the Foundation, as well as the operating methods adopted by it, create with it the" Food Bank Network "for the reception and redistribution of foodstuffs, as well as for the promotion of the aims and activities of the Foundation »(Art. 2, BA Network Statute).

3) How much have you collected to date and how many people help you today?

In 2011 the FBAO he recovered 58,390 tons of food surplus from the European Union, from the Agri-food Industries, from Fruit and Vegetables, from Large Organized Distribution and Organized Catering, it also collected 10,120 tons of food during the National Food Collection Day (GNCA) and through other donations.

1,500 volunteers dedicate their time to our activity, of which 79% are men, 35% between 55 and 65 years, 28% between 30 and 55 and 27% over 65. 35% permanently dedicate half a day a week, 21% one day a week, 19% two days a week. Over 50% of volunteers dedicate their activities to the selection and allocation of products, to the driving of vehicles and to contacts with affiliated charitable structures.

4) Are there areas of the country or realities that are particularly generous compared to others?

The recovery and collection of food surpluses is easier in central and northern Italy than in the south, due to the greater presence of agri-food companies, large-scale distribution centers and distribution centers. Therefore, the recovery of surpluses is more consistent in these areas of the country than in others but simply due to the different organization and location of the fundamental subjects for their recovery.

5) The National Food Collection Day: since when have you started it, what does it consist of and what was the last result?

In 2011 the National Food Collection Day (GNCA) in fact, the first edition of GNCA was in 1997. Since then, every last Saturday of November at the exit of the supermarkets, everyone can donate part of their shopping to those who live in poverty, delivering food to volunteers at the exit of the participating supermarkets. In 2011, 9,600 tons were collected in 9,000 supermarkets, thanks to the help of 120,000 volunteers and over 5,000,000 donors.

6) Siticibo: what is it about? How many realities are involved and how do you want to develop it for the future?

Siticibo is an FBAO program, born in 2003 in Milan, following the approval of the Law of the Good Samaritan and the collaboration with Cecilia Canepa. The aim of the program is to recover surplus cooked and fresh food in organized catering and, since 2009, from retail outlets. The recovery service is daily and is carried out thanks to volunteers who, through a logistic network of equipped vans, transfer food surpluses from large-scale distribution or from company and school canteens to charitable structures.

The program is now developed in 12 Food Bank Organizations, respectively: Lombardy, Piedmont, Trentino Alto Adige, Vento, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio, Marche, Abruzzo, Puglia and Sicily (Catania and Palermo).

7) Do you have collaborations with companies? Was Nespresso a profitable partnership for you? How much did it yield you and how will it continue?

The Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation has in its "DNA" collaboration with the business world. Suffice it to say that one of the co-founders was Cavalier Danilo Fossati, founder and President of STAR Spa. We collaborate both with companies in the agro-food chain, which donate food surpluses, and with companies in different sectors with which we carry out collection projects various types of funds: from co-marketing to corporate volunteering up to event sponsorship.

There collaboration with Nespresso was born in 2011 and for us it is very important because, in addition to having implications in terms of fundraising, it allows us to have great visibility on the media, hitting targets that we could hardly reach.
