The terms "waste recycling“,“ Separate collection ”and“ biodegradable waste ”are expressions that were almost non-existent half a century ago. In agricultural economies, waste almost did not exist: everything was somehow reused. The disposal capacity of the environment and nature cannot cope with the enormous waste production which implements today's society. Garbage is everyone's problem today and that's why we have to avoid producing too much waste counteracting the problem at the origin. The first step for this purpose takes place in the kitchen, it may seem strange but the food sector is one of those where the greatest waste occurs in our homes. Let's see a series of useful rules to understand how to avoid producing too much waste:
–Rationalize purchases. Before doing any shopping, it is good to ask yourself "will I really need it?". Furthermore, rationalizing the purchase of food can represent a significant reduction in spending and waste while safeguarding the family economy. To not produce too much waste it is better to buy few foods so as to always have fresh food and not to fall into the temptation to "stock up", which too often end up forgotten at the bottom of the refrigerator.
–Perennial bags. Do you remember grandma's bags? Use those! A law has imposed the obligation to use biodegradable bags, the obligation was temporary and moreover, not all businesses have respected it. For avoid producing waste highly polluting, such as plastics, put the expenses in one of those fabric bags that seem to be seen also in fashion, so much so that for a period, shops like Fnac, Intimissimi, Yamamay… have given them away to their customers.
–The wraps. When shopping at the supermarket, a central problem is dictated by the wrappers. In addition to using a fabric bag, we can avoid buying those items with excessive packaging; if you are at the supermarket, instead of buying carrots and vegetables in polystyrene packaging, take those in the fruit and vegetable department that can be purchased in bulk, without an additional gram of plastic if not your fabric bag! This way you will avoid produce waste as dangerous as plastic. It has been estimated that packaging accounts for about 40% by weight and 60% by volume of waste urban solids, a careful choice of products could really make a difference.
–Mineral water. The consumption of mineral water is not necessary. Often large quantities of water are left in bottles, stored outside the supermarket waiting to be placed on the shelves, and remain exposed directly to sunlight. This exposure can alter the quality of the water which is then no longer so healthy for the body; for this and other reasons, tap water is very often safer than bottled water. One way to avoid producing too much waste, safeguarding one's health, that of the environment and of one's wallet, concerns the choice of drinking tap water. This would eliminate the production of plastic packaging. If your tap water just doesn't go down, remember that there are filters on the market that completely eliminate the smell of chlorine, making tap water more pleasant.
–Reuse the used, barter and solidarity groups. Before throwing something away, think "can it still help?" and again "If I don't need it, who?". The discourse of the exchange is not only valid for clothing. In the churches and in the caritas groups there are always active collections for clothing but it is good to know that in many cities "no money" markets are organized, also online there are numerous portals where you can give your own "waste“.
